If you’ve been searching for a particular teeth whitening strips review you’ve probably by now realised the huge diversity of teeth whitening products. With the global market for teeth whitening products expected to reach US$7.40 billion by 2024, it’s clearly apparent that teeth whitening is big business. This in part is fuelled by celebrities flaunting Hollywood smiles, social media, and a growing awareness of the importance of oral hygiene.
If you’re longing for whiter teeth then you’re certainly not alone. Just as some people buy new clothes or colour their hair to improve their appearance, others feel the need for a brighter, whiter smile.
One particular teeth whitening treatment that you’ve probably seen advertised is teeth whitening
strips. They’re readily available in stores and can be purchased online and although some people find them to be very effective, you may be wondering if they’re the best over the counter teeth whitener for you. We’ve put together a few pros and cons to help you decide.
Teeth whitening strips review – What you need to know
- Affordability – One of the things that stand teeth whitening strips out from other whitening treatments is their affordability. They’re less costly than professional teeth whitening treatment and the fact that they’re so readily available is another reason that people pick them up over other whitening treatments.
- Easy to use – until you give whitening strips a try you have no way of knowing if they’re one of the best ways to whiten your teeth but they’re certainly the easiest. All you have to do is press the plastic whitening strip in place over your teeth and leave it there for the required amount of time, which is usually around 30 minutes. That’s it – simple.
With take-home teeth whitening trays that you can buy over the counter you have to be careful not to overfill the trays so that the teeth bleach comes into contact with your gums and burns them. Another problem is that the ‘one size for all’ trays may not fit your mouth, are likely to feel uncomfortable, and could make your gums feel sore.
Teeth Whitening Strips Review – The downside…
- Teeth may not lighten very much – Because whitening strips don’t contain such high levels of bleach as professional teeth whitening treatments, they’re best suited to those with only light discolouration or staining. Usually you need to wear them every day for a couple of weeks for the bleaching agent to break down the stains and work its magic; but even then, your teeth might not end up as white as you had hoped.
- Results don’t last as long – However white your teeth appear after using whitening strips, the results will normally only last for a few months, particularly if you revert back to old habits of drinking coffee or smoking. As a result, you’ll find yourself heading to the shops to purchase more teeth whitening strips, on a regular basis.
- Uneven results – Unless you’ve got perfectly even teeth, and few people have, there’s every chance that the strips won’t sit evenly across your teeth meaning that parts of your teeth may not come into contact with the whitening agent. As a result, you could end up with unattractive blotches of white.
Whatever the teeth whitening treatment, it’s always best to seek the advice of your dentist first. Not everyone is suited to teeth whitening and, that being the case, your dentist will be able to suggest more suitable alternatives such as dental veneers or crowns.
Were you aware, for example, that teeth whitening treatments using hydrogen peroxide won’t bleach fillings and crowns? It may be necessary therefore to have these restored following a teeth whitening procedure?

This is something that is kind of important for me. I used to have a better job than I do now, so, I honestly can’t afford to pay a dentist every time I want my teeth a little brighter. Of course I worry about the downsides but I think I can follow a simple video guide or a few written instructions then the strips might work out just fine. Firstly though, I’ll have to seek the advise of my dentist and see if there are more suitable alternatives for me.
I used to do whitening strips but after a thousand cups of caffeinated tea, my teeth stain apparently got worse so I thought switching to a custom mold made from a dentist will do better. However, I think I get just as good of a result from the whitening strips as the dentist’s stuff, but I like whitening strips much better because of the convenience factor. I could just pop it in before leaving the house, hop on the car and take it off once I got to work. I could even talked with this in. My teeth did get a wee bit sensitive but nothing major. Now I’m looking at using it again. Will have to talk to my dentist then.
I bought whitening strips thinking I was saving money and still getting a top notch product. Was I wrong! It barely whitened my teeth. The strips are extremely difficult to insert and be kept in your mouth for 30 minutes too!! I would rather spend a fortune on professional teeth whitening from a dentist for a guaranteed effortless nice white smile.
A friend suggested whitening strips as a cheaper alternative to the service provided by my dentist, so I thought of giving it a shot. However, I felt a mild teeth sensitivity on my first try. I hoped to persevere, and tried again the next morning, which unsurprisingly made it worse. From then, I had two realizations, first, it’s ideal for people who want slightly whiter teeth and who have no problems with teeth sensitivity and second, whatever the teeth whitening treatment, it’s always best to seek the advice of your dentist first.
I’ve used them and well, they did work a tad bit. My teeth whitened by 1-2 shades. Where they seem to be more effective is as a complement to office whitening (under dentist supervision). I’ve tried strips after getting teeth whitening from my dentist and now, my teeth is a couple more shades whiter. Generally, over the counter products are just not as proficient in whitening teeth as in office teeth whitening where you can get up to 6 shades whiter or more.
I’m a heavy coffee drinker and whitening strips do work but they will generally not be as proficient in whitening teeth as professional treatments you can get at your dentist. Also, it’s NOT FOR SENSITIVE TEETH. If you have sensitive teeth like I do, you have to be very careful when using this product and not use it for the recommended amount of time. At one point the pain was so bad I could barely sleep the night I applied the strips.
Strips do work but only temporarily. They will generally not be as proficient as in-chair teeth whitening treatments. You may even have to apply more strips to whiten more teeth at once in which case, the cost benefit is lost. The good thing about using strips is the sensitivity is less likely to happen but that’s just it.
It is frustrating when you set out to achieve certain results and get nowhere. So while I knew how whitening strips are quite convenient and affordable I’ve also wondered if they actually work. And just as I thought, they’re not good enough. Professional teeth whitening options often cost you three to four times more
so I might just as well look for natural effective ways to brighten my smile and seek advice on how to prevent discoloration.
